Every now and then I like to explore new subjects. This is part of a new series of floral portraits rendered in charcoal. I especially enjoy the challenge of trying to convey color in black and white. Black and white reveals what color conceals!
Although I love color, working in the monochromatic medium of charcoal best enables me to express the emotion and light I find so compelling in my subjects. When color is absent, we see things in a different context which creates the opportunity to make new discoveries. We develop a new appreciation for the nuances of tone and structure and can more readily appreciate subtle emotions. My realistically rendered portraits of people, places and objects, hopefully, provide unexpected, enriching and thought-provoking experiences.
